LAYER 4: THE FALSE OASIS

Upon awakening from your brief dreamless sleep, you will find yourself within what appears to be a beautiful jungle full of fruit-bearing palm trees, vines, and bushes. The sky will be blue, and the sun will be directly above your head, its warmth caressing your scalp and shoulders like a gentle massage. You will be overcome with a sense of safety and tranquility, even if you are naturally predisposed to be paranoid or cautious. You will wander through the forest, and after a while of walking you will happen upon a village of seemingly normal travelers. But this is no oasis, and these are not travelers.

The Tempters are similar to the Sirens, in that they will pretend to be kind and compassionate to you for the sake of convincing you to stay in the village with them. However, unlike the Sirens, they don't inject you with any venom. In fact, the fruits are the true danger of this realm, as consumption of them will create a growth within your stomach that will slowly get larger. This will cause considerable pain and discomfort, as you begin to vomit blood and bile. The pain will last what will feel like centuries, until the growth suddenly bursts open, tearing a hole in your stomach and erecting a massive palm tree made of bone, flesh, and organs. You will be paralyzed from the pain, the weight of the parasite that calls your body home, and the roots which will plant themselves into the ground below you. This is when the illusion of the layer shatters. The sky will turn red, the grass will wilt away, and the tempters will reveal their true bodies, taking shape as a hivemind of bugs inhabiting the skins of previous victims. They will tear off your skin first, bringing it into their homes to fashion into new costumes later. Then, they will exit their costumes and begin to slowly consume your body until nothing but the tree itself remains.

To escape the False Oasis, one must repeatedly refuse the offers of food from the Tempters, while remaining in the village for our world's equivalent of a week. Since time doesn't flow within the Inferno, it will likely feel longer than a week, but you must remain strong and never give in. No matter how hungry you get, no matter how thirsty, you must resist. The illusion will shatter, and the tempters will remain still, before dispersing into hordes of bugs. At this point you must make your way through the flesh jungle and find a river made from blood. Step into the blood-soaked river, and several hands will grab onto your legs, slowly dragging you down into the depths and sending you further into The Inferno.

Push forward.
