LAYER 7: THE TRAMPLING FIELDS

You've reached the midway point between the first and second half of The Inferno's layers. You find yourself in a vast open field full of oddly colored sunflowers. Scattered across the fields, there are farmhouses that appear to be old and damaged. Depending on your luck, you may be granted a brief few moments to rest after all of the strain you've put your body through. Looking up at the sky, you will find a bright blue sky made dim by a solar eclipse left frozen in time. Everything here seems peaceful, quiet. But you know better by now. The sky turns red, the sun burns a bright hot white, and the doors to the farmhouses open one by one, revealing the threat of this layer.7RE

The harvesters, often described as being manifestations of pure shadow, take on humanoid shapes that resemble old farmers. They are described as having two beady eyes and a wide smile both made from either white light or holes within their silhouettes. They appear when the sky turns red, to enact a ritual known as "The Harvesting". Upon appearing within the fields, they can do one of two things: They may hunt for travelers who have managed to pass through the previous six layers, in an attempt to entrap them for eternity. If there are no travelers to be found, or if they lose sight of a traveler, they will instead "tend" to the sunflowers that surround the fields.

Upon catching a traveler, harvesters will use their shapeshifting abilities to create various tools out of their body to cut the limbs off of their victims. They will then take the limbless body of the victim, dig a hole in the ground, and plant them in the soil while they're still alive. After sufficient suffocation, the body will begin to change. From the fresh soil mound, a sunflower made from the victim's skin and flesh will appear. When this process is complete, the victim will be permanently transformed, and remain at the mercy of the harvesters, who will cut them down, pluck their nerve-ridden skin "petals", and stomp them into the ground until all that's left is a red stain. When the red sky disappears, regardless of the damage done to the victim, they will always regenerate back to normal.7SP

In order to exit this layer, it is important to keep track of the sun at all times. The sky always turns red when the sun is fully eclipsed, and when the sky turns red, your chances of escape become far less guaranteed. Remain observant. Make use of your environment. Find hiding spots and keep a mental note of their location if you believe the sun is about to fully eclipse. Most important of all: Never remain in one place for too long. You can hide as long as you want, but the Harvesters have an eternity to find you. Run where the sun is not shining. Do not go towards the light. Eventually, you will find an opening to a dirt cavern. If you follow these instructions, you will find yourself within the next layer.7ECT
